Marine alternator regulator comparison

Four external regulators that will charge a lithium bank from an engine alternator, compared on the specifications each manufacturer publishes.

Every figure below comes from the manufacturer's own product page or installation manual, checked on 30 August 2026, with sources linked at the foot of the page. Where a manufacturer does not publish a number, the cell says so rather than guessing. Prices change and manufacturers revise specifications, so treat this as a dated snapshot and confirm anything that decides a purchase.

What the table cannot show

Specification sheets flatten the differences that actually decide an installation. Three of them matter more than anything in the grid above.

What the regulator can see

A regulator that measures only battery voltage is guessing about the alternator. Lithium changes that from an academic point into a thermal one, because a lithium bank will accept everything the alternator can produce until the alternator overheats. Reading alternator current as well as battery current is what allows the field to be limited by the alternator's own condition rather than by a fixed derate.

What happens when the BMS opens

A battery management system disconnecting under charge is the failure mode that destroys alternators and downstream electronics. The useful question for any vendor is not whether load-dump protection exists, but how quickly the field collapses and whether the BMS can warn the regulator over a data link before opening the contactor rather than after.

What happens when the vendor moves on

A regulator is on a boat for a decade or more. Open firmware and published design files mean a charging profile can still be changed, and a fault still diagnosed, after a product line is retired. That is the one column in the table with a permanent answer.

Where the Xregulator is the weaker choice

It is new. Wakespeed, Balmar and ARCO have years of installed base, dealer networks and a service path that does not depend on one person answering email. On a safety-critical part fitted to a boat that may be a long way from help, that track record is worth real money and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

Shipping is currently United States only, with an international waitlist for everywhere else. There is no dealer to install it, and no chandlery holding one on a shelf. Support is direct, through the forum or by email.

What is on offer instead is more capability for less money, every parameter exposed rather than hidden behind a preset, and a design that can be inspected, modified and kept alive independently of whether the company selling it still exists.

Common questions

Which external alternator regulator is best for lithium?

All four have a LiFePO4 program, so the choice comes down to system voltage, alternator type and what the regulator can see. A regulator that reads alternator current as well as battery current can protect the alternator from its own output, which is the failure mode lithium introduces. The Xregulator and the ARCO Zeus both read two shunts; the Balmar MC-618 is a 12-volt P-type regulator and will not suit a 24 V or 48 V bank.

Does charging lithium from an alternator require replacing the alternator?

Usually not. An external regulator replaces the alternator's internal regulator and controls field current directly, so a standard alternator can charge a lithium bank at a rate chosen for the alternator rather than the battery. Replacing the alternator becomes worthwhile when more output is wanted than the existing one can sustain, not to make lithium work at all.

What happens if the BMS disconnects the battery while the alternator is charging?

The alternator loses its load and output voltage spikes, which is what destroys diodes and downstream electronics. Regulators handle this differently, so the question worth asking any vendor is how fast the field is collapsed and whether the regulator can be told about the disconnect in advance over the BMS link rather than discovering it from the voltage.

Is the Xregulator really open source?

Yes. Firmware, hardware design files and documentation are public under GPLv3 at github.com/markliquid1/Regulator2026-public. None of the other regulators here publishes firmware or design files.

Should a WS500 or a Zeus be the choice instead?

Both are proven products with dealer networks and years of installed base behind them, and either is a reasonable choice. The Xregulator is new, and being new is a real disadvantage on a safety-critical part. The honest comparison is price, voltage range, and whether open firmware matters for the installation in question.
